Center for Healing Spaces
Translating eco-environmental science into everyday practices—designing places, spaces, and routines that reduce stress and support healing for people and communities.
Why Healing Spaces?
Our surroundings shape our health—often more than we realize. Light and sound, color and art, fresh air and nature contact, aroma and materials, order and clutter: each affects stress, sleep, mood, attention, pain, and recovery. The Center bridges research from the natural and built environment with practice—so homes, workplaces, clinics, and public places become active partners in healing.
Four Interconnected Pillars
Healing Places (Macro)
Nature and built environments at neighborhood and campus scale—parks, blue/green corridors, clinics, campuses, and streetscapes.
- Access to green/blue space
- Equitable, walkable design
- Anti-displacement strategies
Healing Spaces (Micro)
Room-level sensory design that restores calm and control.
- Biophilic elements (light, air, plants)
- Soundscapes & noise reduction
- Color, art, materials & views
Healing Practices
Everyday habits and therapeutic rituals that leverage place and space.
- Mindful pauses, breath & movement
- Nature-based activities & horticulture
- Sound therapy & healing music
Healing People
Relational care and social support—family, staff, neighbors, and peers—who make spaces feel safe, beautiful, and welcoming.
- Belonging & hospitality
- Choice & voice (agency)
- Shared stewardship
From Evidence to Environments
Translate the Science
We scan research across environmental health, architecture, acoustics, lighting, and sensory science—turning complex findings into simple design moves.
Co-Design with Communities
We align aesthetics and equity—working with residents, staff, and leaders to ensure spaces feel safe, dignified, and culturally resonant.
Implement & Measure
We pilot, evaluate, and refine—tracking outcomes like stress, sleep, attention, pain, satisfaction, and use of space over time.
Room-Level Healing Elements
| Element | Why it matters | Design moves |
|---|---|---|
| Light & Circadian Health | Daylight and warm-cool cycles regulate mood, sleep, and alertness. | Maximize daylight/view; use tunable lighting; minimize night glare. |
| Soundscape | Noise elevates stress; curated audio can calm and mask disruptions. | Acoustic panels/soft surfaces; reduce mechanical noise; offer calming playlists. |
| Air, Aroma & Materials | Fresh air and low-toxin materials reduce irritation and fatigue; gentle scents soothe. | Ventilation; plants where appropriate; low-VOC finishes; optional aromatherapy. |
| Color & Art | Cool, nature-inspired palettes calm; figurative nature art reduces anxiety. | Greens/blues in high-stress areas; landscape art; avoid agitating abstract visuals. |
| Layout & Clutter | Prospect + refuge and orderly space lower cognitive load. | Clear sightlines with cozy nooks; storage to hide clutter; tactile natural textures. |
| Agency | Control over light, sound, and temperature buffers stress responses. | Give users dimmers, thermostats, and sound options; allow personal items. |
